Hospice candlelight vigil is Monday night

LIHU'E — the annual Kaua'i Hospice candle-lighting memorialservice is 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Immaculate Conception Church inKapaia, a press release states.

Community members are invited to participate in the hour-longprogram and light a candle as a glowing symbol of remembrance andaffection for friends and family no longer here.

It takes courage to grieve and honor the pain carried, particularlyduring the holiday season when the world is celebrating, therelease states.

The candle-lighting memorial is one way Kaua'i Hospice can offercomfort, respite and meaningful support to the islandcommunity.

The program is free and open to all members of the public, as wellas visitors.

"As the holidays approach, many of us will gather with family andfriends," said the Rev. Caroline Miura, spiritual-care coordinatorat Kaua'i Hospice.

"More often than not, these gatherings include reminiscing aboutloved ones, re-telling funny family stories, and the sharing ofhonored traditions year after year," she said.

"This emphasis on remembrance can be quite difficult for thosecoping with loss," said Miura.

"For family, friends and neighbors facing grief after the death ofa loved one, the holidays may actually be a time filled with painand sadness," she said.

"The holidays may serve as an annual reminder of the loss — notonly of that person, but of tradition and celebration."

Ibbie White Alshamma will share moments from her personal journeythrough grief as this year's guest speaker.

Once again, the Kapa'a Middle School Choir and 'Ukulele Band, underthe direction of Mary Lardizabal, will perform several musicalselections for the community.

Ron Wiley from KONG Radio Group and Sister Florence Remata fromImmaculate Conception Church will recite the names of loved oneswho have died or who are far away.

Immediately following the program, there will be an informalreception with refreshments.

Many people may not be aware of the support hospice careprofessionals offer to members of the community who are strugglingwith grief during the holiday season.
