Students Guide to Florida State University

Florida State University (FSU) was established through the 1823 Territorial Legislature of Florida that seeks to establish a higher education system. Two seminaries were founded in 1851 through this legislature: West Florida Seminary of Tallahassee and the eastern seminary in Ocala. the eastern seminary, however, closed after the Civil War but reopened in 1866 in Gainesville. Today, it is a sea-grant public university in Tallahassee that offers comprehensive doctoral programs, 15 colleges, and over 300 programs. the University is the state?s flagship institution, granting more than 2,000 graduate and professional degrees annually.

Degrees offered

Florida State University offers a variety of undergraduate degrees through the following colleges:

1. College of Arts and Sciences – Majors range from Biological Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science, to Chemistry, Actuarial Science, German, English, Spanish, Psychology, and French.2. College of Human Sciences- Majors include Exercise Science, Food and Nutrition, Family and Child Sciences, Athletic Training, and Clothing, Textiles, and Merchandising.8. College of Motion Picture Arts9. College of Music – Programs include Music Performance, Music-Liberal Arts such as Jazz, and Music Therapy.10. College of Nursing11. College of Social Sciences and Public Policy – Majors include Economics, Social Science, Sociology, and Political Science.12. College of Social Work13. College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance – Programs range from Interior Design, Dance, and Theatre, to Studio Art and Graphic Design.

Famous and notable alumni include senators Kay Hagan, musicians Scott Stapp, and Jim Morrison, as well as WWE stars Ron Simmons, TV Producer/Writer Steven L. Sears, and scientist Eric J. Barron.

Rankings and reviews

Florida State University placed 53rd among 6000 universities in the 2009 Webometrics World Universities Ranking. According to USA Today and the Princeton Review, it is fourth among America?s public universities. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities, it placed among 200 top world universities and in the top 90 among American universities. the University?s academic programs are placed among the country?s top 25 public universities. These notable programs include Human Sciences, Film, Chemistry, and Visual Art.

Admission tips

Admission to FSU requires at least a 3.0 GPA, a good essay, and enough extra curricular activities. Florida State University is highly selective. They screen applicants not only based on standardized test scores or academic performance but also through extra-curricular activities, talents, athletic skills, and other special abilities.
